Traffic Accident on Hwy 49

According to CHP, Joseph Ciolino, (61) of Mountain Ranch, was driving a 2008 Ford Escape in the northbound traffic lane of Hwy 49 at approximately 45 MPH directly behind a slow moving big rig per witness Mast.

Ciolino, due to his level of intoxication, per CHP, merged to the left in order to pass  Witness Mast without yielding to another vehicle which had already established itself in the southbound lane and was passing Ciolino and witness Mast.

Ciolino observed the other vehicle at the last second and overcorrected to the right.  Ciolino lost control of the Ford, which traveled back to the left, across the southbound traffic lane, and off the west side of Hwy 49.

The Ford struck an embankment and traveled up and across the embankment for a short distance before reentering the southbound traffic lane.

The Ford then overturned.  After the collision, the Ford came to rest on its roof facing in a southerly direction blocking the soutbound traffic lane.

Ciolino was determined to be driving under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for DUI, according to CHP.

Joseph Ciolino and a passenger, Linda James, (67) of Sheep Ranch were transported to Mark Twain Hospital with minor injuries.

Harlene Ciolino, (61) of Mountain Ranch, was uninjured.
