Music in the Park in Murphys

The Calaveras Arts Council's Music in the Parks 2012 series comes to a hilarious close on August 22, 2012 at Murphys Comunity Park with Sourdough Slim and his side-kick Robert Armstrong

Music starts at 6:30 PM, but get there early and stake your ground for these two cowboy entertainers.

Roots revivalists Sourdough Slim and Robert Armstrong are passionate about the music they play and the culture from which it springs.

Proud torch-bearers of America's rich roots music heritage, the two demonstrate their enthusiasm form the first catchy bars of "My Last Old Dollar" to the wistful strains of their phenonenal re-creation of Stan Jones' immortal "Riders In The Sky."

These showmen extraordinaire joyously rekindle the country blues, western classics, vintage jazz and string band repertoire of twentieth century rural America.

A fast-paced performance that showcases their seasoned gift for connecting with audiences is a surefire treat.

Whether capturing the haunting refrain of a Jimmie Rodgers blue yodel or swinging out a hot novelty number, the fun these two cut-ups have on stage leads to a contagious good time for everyone in the house.

Long time fans will remember them as founding members of two of California's favorite acoustic combos; "8th Avenue String Band" and "R. Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders."

Between them they share a provocative array of period instruments including; flat-top guitar, national steel guitar, baritone and soprano ukulele, musical saw, accordion, six-string banjo and harmonica.

Bring your low-back chair, picnic dinner and enjoy the family friendly entertainment and environment.

If you don't feel like packing your own meal, the Murphys Community Club will be selling tri-tip sandwiches accompanied by a green salad and cookie.

Wine, beer and soft drinks will also be available, all at an affordable price.  Proceeds go to maintenance of the park.
