Auditor comments on Calaveras Sheriff's "Scam"

We called the Calaveras County Auditor/Controller Rebecca Callen, to ask about the Sheriff''s  Office not repaying the taxpayers who loaned them upfront money. The Sentinel calls it a "SCAM"!

An outside Auditor, according to Callen was brought in to verify the County's figures and that audit verified what Callen had alleged was happening to County Taxpayers money.

The fact is that the Sheriff has been borrowing money from the taxpayers out of the Calaveras County General Fund in amounts of around $100,000 each, for Law Enforcement services they stated was coming back in the form of a grant the next year.

When that grant was received at the Sheriff's Office it was NOT handed over to the County General Fund to repay the loan, but instead, kept and used by the Sheriff.

Will the Sheriff repay the money they owe the taxpayers, now that the "SCAM" has been made public?

What will this do to the already tarnished reputation of Sheriff Kuntz, who has lost respect of his own deputies and the public? Can he possibly win re-election?

We do not believe so. Only if the public likes dishonesty in our law enforcement community.

On the other hand, our Auditor Rebecca Callen, is unchallenged for re-election to her position. She deserves another term for her honesty and courage.

Callen must be the most honest auditor the county has ever had. It takes guts to take on men with guns!! Good for her!

It's about time someone called out this Sheriff. This isn't the only dishonest thing he has done!

What was the Sheriff doing with the money? Certainly not combatting crime in district 3.

He has no respect for women. That's most likely why he thought he could get away with it. Does this make our Sheriff a CROOK?

Are you kidding. This Sheriff's best buds are "crooks" and "racists"

Do I remember correctly that Steve Wilensky was the one who recommended Kuntz. So much for him caring about the people.

wilensky probably taught him how to do it.

Let us not forget he lets his criminal personal friends out of jail for weddings, but wouldn't do it for any of us. Bias, corruption, and now "scams". Its too much for me.

I forgot all about that. you're right, and he's in favor of allowing his "gun" friends to do whatever they want. He's mixed up with that Oliveiera guy who's running for something.

I heard the candyrock gun people think Kuntz backs them, but he doesn't. its so funny. they aren't very bright. who knows where the truth lies with him.

If this is true? Not only the Sheriff is accountable, but his administration is accountable too.
Tracking the grant funds to how the money was spent will tell of corruption or over-exuberance for department funding.

That new jail is going to be crowded, right quick.

What supervisors were in office at the time of approval of the grants and the non-repayment of funds?
Who was the CAO during the time period?
Somebody, quick, put a lid on this stink!

Maybe government regulations need to be reduced in size. Simplify, so all will know what is going on?
This is a prime example of what one speaker before the board said,
Board members sit down, first day, move forward and don't look back.

Let's clean house. Vote every single elected officail out of office. Better yet make them resign!

They might have to; to make up for the unrecoverable loss.
Sorry, that's what they got us taxpayers for.

A few more months and the budget will be on the agenda.
Will we see a reduction of supervisors pay for doing a half time job?

Why does the county have committee appointments for supervisors? Can't the committees do the job and report back to the supervisors, publicly?

Pay more, receive less, will that phrase be adopted into the county's mission statement, Board of Supervisors mission statement and general plan? It is going to be very relevant, soon.

This is technically garbage. The author of the article and commenters don't know what they are talking about. Rebecca Callen and those making baseless accusations should do their homework first. Look at the State Controllers manual on proper finance procedure on revenue recognition before writing this crap. Also, take time to read about reimbursements and cash flow. Revenue was earned on the accrual basis and recognized on the cash basis when received. It WAS returned to the county. Rebecca fails to verify proper state procedure and get her facts straight before she slings mud. None of the commentators actually verify she knows what she is talking about. Disgusting. Shameless, foolish puppets. She gets things wrong constantly and people in the county, including departments outside of the sheriffs office, knows she gets stuff wrong constantly.
