According to a CHP report on March 9, 2014 at approximately 3:14 AM, Angels Camp Police Officer Steven Poortinga (36) of Angels Camp was driving a patrol car on Hwy 4 at 65-70 MPH, approaching a left hand curve at Angels Road.
For unknown reasons, Officer Poortinga failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway, traveling onto the right shoulder, striking a paddle marker.
The Ford Crown Victoria continued off the shoulder and struck a tree, where it came to rest.
Officer Poortinga was taken to Doctors Hospital in Modesto with major injuries.
